Age of Empires is a historical real-time strategy game created by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft in 1997 for Windows.
It's one of the most popular video games franchises ever created. The series, made of 4 main titles and spinoffs, has sold more than 20 million copies.
The first game, Age of Empires I, was released on the 26th of October 1997. It is set during the early years of human civilization from the Stone Age until the Iron Age. That's why many have defined it 'Civilization' in real-time, although the two games are quite different.
